A guide for evaluating social and news media, online sources of information, and identifying bias for Journalism I.

Lesson Objectives

Lesson #1

  • We will evaluate various sources of media by understanding purpose and using a criteria in order to critically view bias

Lesson #2

  • We will identify and exemplify fake news vs. media bias vs. reliable sources by evaluating sources of information by participating in a classroom panel.

Imagine this scenario: A fight broke out during lunch between two students, Student A and Student B.

In your groups, discuss the possible retelling of the events and any possible bias from the following points of view:

  • Group 1: A student waiting in line for a sandwich
  • Group 2: A student that is friends with Student A, who "started" the fight.
  • Group 3: A student that is friends with Student B, who "continued" the fight.
  • Group 4: A teacher on lunch duty
  • Group 5: An administrator that had to break up the fight
  • Group 6: A student that wasn't at the caf, but posted about the fight on Snapchat.
